Faces
When I first went to the wilderness (now I’m not sure such a thing exists except inside our heads) the draw was the relative absence of people. It was travels in backcountry of the north particularly that showed me through chance meetings and the kindness of strangers that the most meaningful way to encounter these places was through the eyes and the experiences of fellow travelers for whom my wild places were home. What that these encounters revealed was beauty the outsider might never have experienced in the physical landscapes but also in the faces of the people who, more often than not, welcomed me in.
